Beyond the Book Literature Festival 2024

Meeting authors face to face and the excitement of author book signing sessions were just some of the highlights of a great day out at the recent Beyond the Book Literature Festival. The Festival, held at the University Sunshine Coast Sippy Downs Campus was an excellent opportunity for groups of students from Years 5 – 12 to soak up the experience of hearing authors, illustrators, writers, and journalists share the passion of reading and writing.

In its 29th year the Festival with a new name and ‘branding’ delivered yet again a range of engaging sessions for our students to celebrate stories, illustrations, and the power of the written and spoken word. Connecting students with acclaimed authors and illustrators provides an authentic context for sharing stories, igniting imaginations, and building skills for our young writers.

Our student feedback highlights their appreciation of the day:

It was super fun to hear how the authors and illustrators produce their final product. I loved it when they got involved with the students, including drawing with Sami Bayly or Katrina Nannestad telling us about her family stories. I thoroughly enjoyed Beyond the Book Literature Festival and I would love to go again as soon as possible.Ashley Year 6

At Beyond the Book Literature Festival we learnt fun drawing and writing tips and had loads of fun. I learnt how to draw a cartoon. Meeting the authors was amazing! Elijah Year 5

I loved going to the festival and hope to go again. I loved getting autographs from the authors and illustrators, including Aaron Blabey’s, the author and illustrator of Pig the Pug. I loved learning about the process of writing and illustrating. With all of this new information, I am keen to create and make my very own book series!Charlie Year 5

Beyond the Book Literature Festival was amazing! We met authors like Louise Park, Mick Elliot, Sarah Armstrong, and Katrina Nannestad. Each talk and workshop came with lots of fun, a powerful message, and tips for great writing. I really enjoyed it and hope future groups will enjoy it too.Hannah Year 6

I enjoyed the last workshop of the day, when we were doing the poems, it was challenging to think of different words to write in our poems. I also liked how we could choose what the poems were going to be about. –  Erin Year 7

In the “Write a Thriller” workshop, I gained powerful insight into what a thriller is vs a mystery, and then creating a thriller as a group was incredible!  – Isabella, Year 12

I loved buying books and meeting the authors to sign the books.Naarah Year 9

I most definitely recommend attending future Festivals. It’s an amazing experience with author talks and workshops, and you never have a dull moment. Just going through the Uni itself was an amazing experience – it was breathtaking!Laura Year 9

I found the last session the most inspiring as I learnt about a different culture and how the author, Sarah Ayoub, changed a negative list that she had made, into a book! Kirra Year 9

Favourite Festival quote: ‘Your job as a writer is to change your character’s life!’ A.J.Betts – Virtual Festival author

Some of our Senior students had the opportunity to see author C. S. Pacat (a US Times Number 1) and listen to her share about her creative writing journey across various platforms. Students also met Ellie Marney who shared her research on crime and the part it plays in the development of her successful crime novels. Oliver Phommavanh cleverly employed the art of humour to share some of life’s challenges through his characters and stories for younger readers.

The excitement of meeting and hearing accomplished authors share their work was definitely the highlight of the Festival. Our students love this day out at the University at this fantastic local event where they are immersed in experiences that provide insights and inspiration for their own creative writing. Special thanks to the wonderful staff and parent helpers who assisted us at the excursion. We look forward to more opportunities for our students to connect with authors and illustrators and for them to be inspired to read more and also to share their own writing!
