Ashton, Sophie and Izaac show their talent at Primary Athletics Carnival

Students were once again excited about competing in the Primary Athletics Carnival at the Sunshine Coast University Track and were full of energy and enthusiasm.

The track and field event rotations started after the first challenge of the day – the thunderous war cry competition. Students competed in the 100m, 200m, long Jump, high jump and discus events with the 800m and shotput events being held at GCC.

Seventeen new records were set, six of these by Ashton van Straten and four by Sophie Doyle. Several of the records broken were set many years ago so it is fantastic to see our students setting new and higher standards for the future.

Sophie Doyle dominated her age group scoring 68 out of a possible 70 points winning all events except highjump where she placed second!

Ashton van Straten won every event in the 12 boys competition to score a record 70 points! Ashton trains hard in athletics and is talented in every event. He is looking forward to competing at the Regional Championships and hopefully qualifying for the Qld State Championships.

Izaac Kwarcianyi also dominated his 10 year age group winning five of the seven events and setting records in long jump and high jump.

All athletes competed hard and to the best of their ability with many close races and competitions being seen. In many cases, there were only centimetres separating field event winners and just also sprinters!

Every student earned house points for each event they competed in and the points competition during the day was very close between Zion and Sinai. The totals were too close to call on the carnival day but when all points were tallied Sinai were just 39 points ahead of Zion with Sinai on 1359 points and Zion on 1320 points Ararat was in third place with1033 points.

It was fantastic to have so many parents supporting our students at this event and also helping out at some events. We look forward to a strong team competing at the Glasshouse District Athletics Championships being held next term.
