It was an action packed day last Friday when the Prep to Year 2 students gathered on the oval ready for their Junior Athletics day. The day was named the GCC Winter Games in line with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games which we all enjoyed earlier in the year.
The children were excited as they flooded on to the oval to assemble in their amazing house tents. The house captains and families had done such a great job of decorating every tent. The war cries rang out before Mrs Bryers declared the games “open”.
Students rotated through sprint races, long jump, tug of war and an obstacle course in the first part of the day. There was fierce competition in the tug of war with the parents being challenged by the students – who do you think won?
Long jump tested the ability of these little ones and they jumped really well using the skills learnt during their PE lessons. The obstacle course challenged balance, agility and tenacity as the children raced their friends over a variety of obstacles. The sprint races saw students run as fast as they ever have, trying to gain the best placing possible. The finals were held with all first place runners racing off to find the gold, silver and bronze medallists in each year group.
Medals were presented at the medal ceremony as the winners stood on the dais and the winners house burst into their war cry as an anthem. What a proud moment this was for these students.
The Tabloid activities followed after a well-earned lunch break. Children were divided into country teams and marched off proudly to their first activity behind their country flag. Points were gained at some activities and these were tallied to find the Champion House. The children enjoyed kayaking, javelin throwing, rugby sevens and basketball just to name a few.
After eight rounds of tabloids we had some very tired children but they had had a fantastic day of fun and competition. Everyone received a medal for the great effort they put in during the day.
House points were tallied and Zion emerged as the winning house much to the delight of their team. The Year 3 Zion House captains thanked everyone for a great day and were presented the House Athletics Trophy by Mrs Bryers.
It was tremendous to see so many parents, family members and friends supporting our junior students. Their help was also much appreciated during the Tabloid Activities and the cheering lifted everyone’s performances.
